Upcoming A2L Refrigerant Changes and Equipment Availability

At Mitchell Heating & Cooling, we’re committed to keeping you informed about important industry changes that could impact your comfort and HVAC needs. Beginning Jan. 1, 2025, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that all new HVAC equipment utilize A2L refrigerants instead of the current R-410A in all HVAC equipment being manufactured today. This new A2L refrigerant must have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 700 or less; as required by the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020. This initiative is aiming to phase down the use of high-GWP hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) to mitigate climate change. This change is part of an industry-wide effort to reduce environmental impact and increase efficiency.

A2L refrigerants, such as R-454B and R-32, are classified as mildly flammable but non-toxic, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional refrigerants like R-410A. To comply with these new standards, HVAC manufacturers are retooling their facilities and retraining their employees, leading to a phased reduction in the production of equipment using older refrigerants. With this transition, the availability of HVAC equipment that uses the older R-410A refrigerant is becoming increasingly limited; while the full range of the new A2L equipment is not yet being produced. If you’re considering or need to replace your HVAC system before the end of 2024 and into early 2025, we strongly encourage you to start the process very soon to ensure your preferred equipment is available. Please keep in mind that certain models and systems may no longer be available due to this change.
